Position Description

This position coordinates all phases of nutrition care including nutrition assessment, care planning, monitoring, education and counseling of hospitalized patients and outpatients.  Perform duties in support of and in compliance with performance improvement plans, The Joint Commission, and other licensing, accrediting, and regulatory agencies.


Position Summary:

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide medical nutrition therapy integrated with the patient's medical goals.

  • Evaluate, interpret, monitor and document the nutritional status and nutritional needs of hospitalized patients and outpatients using established standards of care and practice guidelines.

  • Identify and provide age-specific nutrition counseling to meet the cultural needs of the patients and their families.

  • Write/modify orders for diet, supplement, and enteral nutrition, and parenteral nutrition per hospital policy.

  • Develop, review, update, and implement educational materials to meet the needs of patients and professionals.

  • Provide education to medical staff and other disciplines on optimal nutritional care.

  • Counsel patients and their families on proper nutritional care.

  • Collaborate and communicate with the Food Service department on established processes, special diets and menu requests.

  • Function as an integral member of the clinical interdisciplinary team.

  • Manage and promote nutrition programs and develop resources for nutritional education according to University Health standards and policy.

  • Teach and precept Louisiana Tech University dietetic interns.

  • Provide on the job training for newly hired clinical staff.

  • Independently develops solutions to problems or issues and involves management when necessary.

  • Stays current with most recent nutrition-related trends, research, policies, certifications, and standards of practice.

  • Complete monthly performance improvement and productivity reports.

  • Comply with University Health Nutrition Services attendance standards.

Position Requirements


  • Bachelor’s degree in Nutrition

  • Licensed (or provisionally licensed) by Louisiana Board of Examiners in Dietetics and Nutrition (LBEDN)

  • Registered Dietitian status (or RD eligible) by Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR)

  • Maintain RD status per the Professional Development Portfolio through CDR

  • Preferred: Two years related work experience.

  • Good verbal and written communication skills to convey information and knowledge

Contract RD Consultant

Position Requirements

HTI has contracted opportunities for consulting dietitians. HTI RDs routinely provide nutritional assessment, MDS and care planning: other duties include oversight of dining services including meal rounds and kitchen inspection. Our RD’s are available to provide in-service training to Dining managers and staff. The HTI RD acts as a liaison with other members with health care team to insure high quality nutritional care is delivered through excellent meal services. RD’s assist with policy development and monitor the implementation of effective nutritional care systems.

All consults will occur during normal business hours.

State licensure and CDR required and prefer 2 years of clinical and LTC experience.
